Website Health Check · Free SEO Audit
You’re up early, you answer calls after hours, and you put real care into every job. Your website should be pulling its weight too: showing up when locals search, answering their questions and turning visitors into phone calls and enquiries.
But for many South Australian small businesses, the website is more like a business card that sits in a drawer. It exists, but it’s not doing much.
Here are seven quick checks to find out whether your website is genuinely working for you. Most take a few minutes, and none need technical skills.
Check 1: Can Google actually find your pages?
Search Google for site:yourwebsite.com.au (using your own domain). Google’s SEO Starter Guide recommends this as a first check: if results from your site appear, you’re in Google’s index.
Then look for your most important pages: your main services, your location pages, your contact page. If something important is missing, Google may not have indexed it, and a page that isn’t indexed can’t bring you customers from search.
For a proper look, Google’s free Search Console tool shows which pages are indexed and why others aren’t.
Check 2: Do your page titles say what you do and where?
Your page title is usually the blue clickable headline in Google results. Google calls this the title link, and says it’s often the main thing people use to decide which result to click.
Google’s advice is to:
Give every page its own title
Make titles descriptive and concise
Avoid vague titles like “Home” or “Services”
Avoid keyword stuffing and repeated, boilerplate titles
Quick test: search for your business and read your own result. Would “Home | Smith & Co” make a stranger click? “Emergency Plumber Adelaide | Smith & Co Plumbing” probably would.
Check 3: Does it work well on a phone?
Pull out your phone and visit your own website as if you were a customer. Does it load quickly? Can you read the text without zooming? Can you tap your phone number to call?
Google says its core ranking systems look to reward content that provides a good page experience, and asks whether your content displays well on mobile devices. Google also uses Core Web Vitals in its ranking systems. Google’s web.dev guidance sets these “good” targets:
- Largest Contentful Paint (loading): within 2.5 seconds
- Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness): 200 milliseconds or less
- Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability): 0.1 or less
You don’t need to memorise these. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool will tell you whether your pages pass. Just remember Google’s own reminder: there’s more to a great page experience than scores alone.
Check 4: Is it obvious how to contact you?
A visitor should know within seconds what you do, where you work and how to get in touch. Check that:
- Your phone number is visible and tappable on mobile
- There’s a clear button like “Get a quote” or “Book now” on key pages
- Your contact form is short and actually works (send yourself a test)
- Your service areas are clear, such as northern suburbs, the Hills or all of metro Adelaide
Check 5: Does your content answer real customer questions?
Google’s helpful content guidance asks whether someone will leave your page feeling they’ve learned enough to achieve their goal. Think about the questions you answer on the phone every week: price ranges, timeframes, what’s included, which suburbs you cover. If your website doesn’t answer them, your competitors’ websites might.
Content that shows your first-hand experience, like real job photos, examples and your honest opinions, is exactly what Google encourages.
Check 6: Is your Google Business Profile connected and current?
For local businesses, your Business Profile often gets seen before your website. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. Make sure your website link, hours, categories and photos are all current, and that your profile and website tell the same story.
Check 7: Do you know what your website is bringing in?
If you can’t answer “how many enquiries did the website bring in last month?”, that’s a gap. Google suggests looking beyond clicks to the overall value of visits, such as sales, sign-ups and enquiries. Set up tracking for calls and form submissions so you can see what’s working.
How did you go?
If you ticked all seven, well done, your website is likely in good shape. If you found a few gaps, you’re not alone. Most small business websites have at least a couple of quick wins hiding in plain sight.

How long does it take to see results from SEO changes?
Google says some changes can take effect in a few hours while others can take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks to assess whether a change helped.
